Irving H. Zucker 2020 Jun 10 : H1-H2 https://doi.org/10.1152/ajpheart.00408.2020 RESEARCH ARTICLES Cardiovascular Neurohormonal Regulation Chemogenetic activation of intracardiac cholinergic neurons improves cardiac function in pressure overload-induced heart failure Jhansi Dyavanapalli, Aloysius James Hora, Joan B. Escobar, John Schloen, Mary Kate Dwyer, Jeannette Rodriguez, Christopher F. Spurney, Matthew W. Kay, David Mendelowitz 2020 Jun 10 : H3-H12 https://doi.org/10.1152/ajpheart.00150.2020 Intracardiac ganglia form the final common pathway for the parasympathetic innervation of the heart. This study has used a novel chemogenetic approach within transgenic ChAT-Cre rats [expressing only Cre-recombinase in choline acetyl transferase (ChAT) neurons] to selectively increase intracardiac cholinergic parasympathetic activity to the heart in a pressure overload-induced heart failure model. The findings from this study confirm that selective activation of intracardiac cholinergic neurons lessens cardiac dysfunction and mortality seen in heart failure, identifying a novel downstream cardiac-selective target for increasing cardioprotective parasympathetic activity in heart failure. Exercise and Cardiac Remodeling in Normal and Athletic States Cardiac endurance training alters plasma profiles of circular RNA MBOAT2 Anna Meinecke, Saskia Mitzka, Annette Just, Sarah Cushman, Stevan D. Stojanović, Ke Xiao, Frank C. Mooren, Jan Fiedler, Thomas Thum 2020 Jun 10 : H13-H21 https://doi.org/10.1152/ajpheart.00067.2020 In brief, we herein report a timeline of circulating circular RNA (circRNA) MBOAT2 in a cohort of marathon runners. Time-course analysis of plasmatic circRNA MBOAT2 demonstrated a significantly lowered level 24 h after the marathon. Abundancy of circRNA was correlated to physical exercise parameters highlighting the role of circRNA MBOAT2 as a valuable noncoding RNA biomarker detecting and following up cardiopulmonary adaption. Integrative Cardiovascular Physiology and Pathophysiology Neurovascular coupling is not influenced by lower body negative pressure in humans Milena Samora, Lauro C. Vianna, Jake C. Carmo, Victor Macedo, Matthew Dawes, Aaron A. Phillips, Julian F. R. Paton, James P. Fisher 2020 Jun 10 : H22-H31 https://doi.org/10.1152/ajpheart.00076.2020 Visual stimulation evoked a robust increase in posterior cerebral artery velocity and a modest increase in vertebral artery blood flow, i.e., neurovascular coupling (NVC), which was unaffected by lower body negative pressure in humans (LBNP). In addition, although LBNP induced a mild hypocapnia, this degree of hypocapnia in the absence of LBNP failed to modify the NVC response. See full Table of Contents Editor-in-Chief Irving H. Is there a difference in sudden cardiac death risk between smoking tobacco cigarettes vs. e-cigarettes? Yet little research has been done to date investigating the mechanisms mediating the link between PTSD and cardiovascular disease in women.
